University Internship Program

Overview

EYEJ empowers and amplifies the voices of teens & pre-teens by bridging them with diverse individuals to engage in interactive discussions centered on social justice.

In this program, we tackle topics like Toxic Stress, Jobs and Entrepreneurship, Health, and Youth/Police Relationships in the Community. Our goal is to encourage an open dialogue with Cleveland’s young people, and we’re looking for strong candidates to join the conversation!

The Discussion Series program facilitates monthly sessions (2 hour commitment) with 6th – 12th grade classes in multiple Cleveland schools. Each month follows a different topic carefully chosen to address a particular social justice related topic that affects the Cleveland youth population in powerful ways. Our volunteers are provided with a prewritten Speaker Document to guide an open dialogue with each class. Our program enters smaller groups of teens & preteens to engage in more personal conversations and employs (3) key volunteer positions: the Facilitator, the Speaker, and the Coordinator. The Coordinator is responsible for managing paperwork and documentation associated with the Discussion. The Speaker guides the conversation from the “Speaker Doc.” The Facilitator helps to oversee the Discussions with each class throughout the semester and provides feedback following the session.

We are excited to find interns/volunteer Speakers and Coordinators who are passionate about social justice and the Cleveland community.

Speaker

The Discussion Series Speaker leads 1 Hr open, honest discussions (2 Hr total time commitment) with 6-12th grade students in several schools in Cleveland on a monthly basis. Speakers will use a pre-written speaker guide using EYEJ’s curriculum, tying in their own personal stories, experiences, and expertise to create an authentic and dynamic discussion with the youth. Each month follows a different topic that addresses a particular social justice related issue affecting Cleveland’s youth population in powerful ways.

Throughout the month, the Discussion Series Speaker posts to EYEJ social media pages, including photos from events, highlights from discussions, and other creative ways to engage with the EYEJ mission. Speakers will act as a Social Media Ambassador for EYEJ, contributing to the EYEJ social media presence as well as our Blog. You must also complete a report following each event. This is your chance to help lead the conversation in the EYEJ community! We welcome interns to remain with EYEJ for a semester or a full year and to join us for either the minimum requirement of events or attend more as able!
