EYEJ’s first-ever experience at Cleveland GiveCamp turned out to be a huge success! Though EYEJ team members and GiveCamp volunteers alike left the weekend a bit tired and frazzled, the impact of the completed work made those feelings completely worth it.

With that being said, here are three key takeaways that EYEJ will use as it continues growing its services for Cleveland.

1. Continue seeking out challenges.

You cannot run away from opportunities for improvement, even when it may be difficult to bring those opportunities to fruition. EYEJ continually works to improve on its successes and find new, innovative ways to contribute to the development of Cleveland youth.

2. React positively to setbacks.

EYEJ faced some obstacles on its way to winning the Andy Craze remembrance award at GiveCamp. EYEJ used creative problem-solving methods to work around challenges. Additionally, the volunteers at GiveCamp gave outstanding efforts to ensure every non-profit could achieve its goals for the weekend.

As was mentioned in a previous blog post, GiveCamp showed off Cleveland’s innate kindness and willingness to empathize with others. GiveCamp volunteers, in particular, showed a willingness to be flexible and would change projects on the fly to meet the needs of twenty one different non-profits.

3. Affirm the program’s value.

Sometimes, it can be easy to lose sight of the students–the people EYEJ wants to help–in the midst of creating funding documents, building a new website, and launching a community forum. Maintaining perspective can help you remember why you’re willing to endure challenging or stressful situations.

Getting the chance to collaborate with a few young children during the weekend demonstrated the value of our program. Additionally, re-affirming a set of core beliefs or principles can make it easier for you to then show others why your idea is worthy of attention and support.

EYEJ looks forward to continuing to build off this past successful weekend, and will definitely use the lessons learned at GiveCamp in the future.
