What is a Discussion Series? by Brandy Scheule
Many people are unsure about what the Discussion Series involves. I was a bit unsure about it myself before participating in one of these events November 2017. Have you ever participated in the EYEJ Discussion Series?
For those that haven’t gotten involved yet, it can be hard to understand what this is all about. EYEJ works with 3 schools in the Cleveland area. We specifically work with boys and girls in grade levels 6 – 8. Each session provides time for a 30 minute briefing from the EYEJ Leadership team, 55 minutes with the students, and a 30 minute debrief and feedback session with EYEJ.
In the 7th grade girl’s classroom at Mound, the Discussion Series began with an open dialogue about preventative diseases, as the topic was Healthy Eating. We found that all the students had a relative that has been affected by these health conditions. The speakers made the connection between how lifestyle and diet can prevent developing these medical problems and how this leads to social justice. The 7th grade girls were active participants in the discussion. After a group activity, one of the speakers had an interactive planned. The last 5 minutes of the Discussion Series focused on exercise. The girls seemed to have a lot of fun trying the moves.
The key takeaways from the Discussion Series are understanding the issues that students are facing and the importance of being heard. The girls communicated many of the barriers that they have to healthy eating. Lack of time to eat breakfast, minimal options, and uncertainty of how to influence food purchasing decisions are the primary issues that we need to help the students work through. It is important to make sure that we keep the discussion open.
