Volunteer at EYEJ, Pick Up a Skill or Two by Amelia Horton

Most people that decide to volunteer at a charity or non-profit do so in order to give back to a cause they are passionate about without even thinking about the skills they may pick up or the wonderful people they will meet. When my journey with EYEJ first started, it was because I was looking for a way to get involved with an organization that supported the youth, yet I have gained so much more than I was expecting in the form of new skills and knowledge. I’m helping EYEJ with salesforce and data entry which may seem like a small task, but salesforce is a very powerful tool and nearly impossible to fully master. I’m learning more while having my abilities challenged and in my opinion that is one of the best forms of personal growth. If I hadn’t joined EYEJ I wouldn’t have thought to explore salesforce further or work on the things I’m doing now.

This is my way of saying “if you are hesitating on devoting time to volunteer, just do it!” Not only will you be giving back, but you’ll gain skills that can help in so many areas of your life such as your personal development or career (talk about a good resume builder). And don’t worry, if data isn’t your thing there are plenty other volunteer opportunities that can develop and test your skills whether it’s working directly with the youth or fundraising – however, volunteering could be the perfect opportunity to step outside of your box and try something totally new!  If interested email hello@eyej.org to find out what volunteer opportunities are available.
